Name: Marsonian
Marsonia is a very red planet. It's surface is covered in rich deposits of iron oxide giving the landscape a very dull reddish color over vast areas. Water on the surface is rare and is mostly found in large subterranean caves. Marsonian cities draw water from huge wells drilled deep into the crust below the water table.
Fauna on the planet was once lush and many fossil remnants remain, but volcanic activity has eradicated most of the planets natural life. No plantlike survives on the planet except in a few regions around the equator of the planet. Most plant life is grown in controled environments within the Marsonian shield cities.
Animal life is mostly small rodent like animals and avian life. Like Marsonians, the animal life can absorb nutrients through the skin from the air and soil they come in contact with. The avian life fly up high using volcanic vents in order to absorb humidity from the upper atmosphere while most of the ground animal life burrow into the soil to absorb water that might be found there.
The planet is distant from it's star so sunlight, even on a smog free day, is dim which has caused many of the life on the planet to evolve large eyes to collect as much light as possible, as well as a sensitivity to the infrared spectrum to better see in the dark.
Volcanic steam vents are constantly spewing steam into the atmosphere and volcanic ash still fills the air even after it's titanic volcanic activity has ceased hundreds of years ago. The atmosphere is breathable for short periods of time for most humanoid species but an extended period of time will cause mucus membrane issues due to the constant breathing of dust and ash in the air.
The harshness of the planet is one of the reasons for the relatively slow technological advancement of the Marsonian species. For such a long standing civilization, most of their efforts have been devoted to surviving within their shield cities, rather than actually inventing new and profound technology. As they went into space and freed themselves from the harsh Marsonia environment, their technology bloomed. The planet is surrounded by many space stations and platforms.
The planet used to have two small moons. However a collision with an asteroid knocked the planets more distant moon out of orbit. Luckily, debris was cut to a minimum by the planets closer moon which took the brunt of the debris. However, the meteor bombardment as well as the destabilization of the forces of gravity on the planet caused wide spread tectonic movement. Hundreds of volcano's all over the planet erupted. Within a hundred years the planets temperature dropped and life on the surface of the planet came to near extinction. The Marsonians saved themselves by walling off their cities with giant shield domes which protected them from the volcanic activity as well as allowed them to grow their own resources using artificial light.
In the centuries that have passed since that incident, the weather on the planet had calmed down significantly and volcanic activity is at an all time low. large rifts on the planet still vent large amounts of a steam and ash into the air but large eruptions have gone from nearly a yearly problem to a rare occurrence.
One of the only remaining landmarks of their civilization before being forced into the shield cities is a huge monument on the surface of the planet. A giant face was carved into the top of a mountain. Seen only from space, the Face is an eerie reminder of their past and a common pilgrimage site for their people to pay homage to their past. The Face was carved out of a particular mountain called Claw Mountain. It is customary for pilgrims at the site to chant "The Claaaawwwwww" as the sun rises over the peak of the mountain.
Marsonians are short, grayish skinned beings with large heads. Their brains are massive compared to most humanoid species and they have advanced rapidly. Their dependence on their intelligence and technology has caused their bodies to wither. Young and elderly Marsonians don't even have the upper body strength to support their huge noggins.
Adults stand anywhere from 3-5 feet tall. Their skin tone ranges from light gray to tan. They sport very large black eyes with no lids or discernible pupils.
They're clothing is usually some form of white jumpsuit. It's adorned with some kind of symbol that is important to the individual Marsonian so that they can better tell each other apart.
Higher ranking individuals in their society sometimes wear headdress like articles over their dome heads. These headdresses are almost always purple in color.
Marsonia is distant from it's host star so light upon the planet is dim. Some bright stars are even visible during the daylight hours. In response to this, the Marsonians have developed large eyes. They have no lids as the actual corneas themselves will tint when exposed to extreme light. They have also adapted to see well into the infrared range. Their pupils are actually the entire size of their eye to collect the maximum amount of light. Many other humanoid species find their huge, unblinking eyes that seem to stare lifelessly kind of creepy. To help with foreign debris, they all tend to ware contact lenses which protect their eyes from dust.
Their short bodies are completely devoid of any kind of macho muscles. their thin necks can barely support their gigantic, brain buckets. Young Marsonians need constant neck support in order for their necks to develop properly and the elderly Marsonians will find themselves confined to hover chair that support their heads or with some kind of back brace that augments the neck's natural support.
The copious amounts of brain goo held within their domes is their greatest advantage. They think fast, they learn fast and they adapt fast. Problems are challenges to be overcome and the fastest but most elegant solution is the prize. They have fantastic memory and their cognitive abilities are through the roof. Some people think their telepathic because they hardly ever talk to each other, but in reality they just know what the other is going to say because they have deduced it themselves ahead of time.
Their mouths are used only for breathing and speaking. All other bodily intake is absorbed through the skin. This makes them especially susceptible to gas attacks but much better in airless environments because their skin actually absorbs extra oxygen so they can "hold their breath" longer than most humanoids.
The average life span of a Marsonian, unaided by technology is 50 years. With their vast array of medical science and high technology that number can be extended to as much as 150 years.
Their voices tend to be higher in pitch because of their smaller vocal cords. When they do speak, it's usually very, very quick and to the point, almost to the point where it sounds like they are speaking with zero punctuation.
Marsonians mature rather quickly as well. Since they are all clones, the cloning process they use has been modified over the years to make clones that mature faster than a natural born. Each clone can become a rational, thinking, and emotionally mature being in as little as 10 years.
Marsonians evolved on the dark planet of Marsonia. It was once a much more lush planet in that it had a lot more life on it than it does now. However, a very long time ago, a meteor impact shifted the orbit of one of Marsonia's moons. This shifted orbit caused massive tectonic fluctuations on the planet and triggered a rapid series of volcano's to erupt. The planet grew cold and many settlements were wiped out.
Those that survived used their technology to erect shields around their cities and towns which protected them from the gasses and debris spewed from the volcano's. Marsonian culture went from something similar to humans now on earth to a survival mentality. The concept of currency or economy was completely forgotten by their culture and each individual worked for the betterment of the species. Breeding was tightly controlled to keep checks on population growth. Eventually sex, which was not the enjoyable act it is for humans, became something of a taboo. Cloning became the new preferred method of reproduction as it could be controlled much more readily than sexual reproduction.
The cities grew and their shields grew with them. Eventually the Marsonians moved into space, building space stations and ships to carry their species to the stars.
As their technology progressed further and further, their bodies and physical forms degraded. Seeing this as just another challenge for their minds to overcome, they built legions of robotic workers to take on the day to day tasks of life. These are not droids, but highly efficient robots. Constructing a sentient android like being in Marsonian culture is a serious event as that being must be granted all the rights and privileges of all Marsonians, and it must be taught to understand their way of life and it's roll in their society as all Marsonians are taught.
Within the next 14,000 years of their culture, their ability to reproduce sexually regressed into nothing. They became totally dependent on cloning and any trace of gender in their species had been removed.
300 years ago, they developed their first Hyperdrive. 10 years after that they commenced an exploration of the galaxy at large. Their first encounters with other beings were fascinating to them. Other cultures, other technology, other designs. Everything to them was new and exciting. Despite their thirst for discovery though, they have taken things slow, branching out only so much as they are ready to. They discover a home planet to some alien species and wait until they document as much information as they can before they venture out further to other planets.
It is for this reason that it has taken them 300 years to discover the outer regions of both Federation and Imperial space. From all the cultures they've traded with and observed, they have adapted technologies to suit them. Cybornetics, powered armor, computer interfaces, AI programming, hyperdrives and shield technology are all things that they have taken from other planets, adapted, modified and improved upon for their own species.
They have just begun considering sending ambassadors out to these galactic governments to begin discussions.
The Marsonians have a very "is this good for the species" type mindset. Each individual is constantly thinking of new ways to better the lives of everyone around him by designing a new robot or develop a new technology. There are not "corporations" or "governments." Marsonians are judged by their intelligence and how much they have contributed to the species overall. Some of the greats, like their inventor of Shields and later the inventor of their hyperdrive are held in almost a revered status.
While important people in their society are constantly honored and looked up to, it should be said that they do not subscribe to any religion. Anything that they can not measure and quantify scientifically, they virtually ignore.
Sex is a taboo for them. Even the mere mention of it in a public setting makes them highly uncomfortable. Every one of them is a clone from a previous generation. The last sexually reproduced individual was born 4,000 years ago. Every individual since then has been a clone of a Marsonian from a previous generation. While each clone is indeed a genetic copy of a previous Marsonian, they are still all treated as individuals rather than mere copies. They view genetics as the mere physical building blocks, and each mind has evolved and developed individually and therefore, mind is it's own individual, regardless of the genetics it rides around it.
They had no concept of cultural expansion until recently. They had no music, or dance, or art. Only things that could benefit their species was ever even considered. As they have explored outwardly into the galaxy however, they have tried to better understand the culture of other species by trying to develop one of their own. This has lead to a group of Marsonians to develop music and art by taking and combining the music and art of other species, taking what they see as suitable and leaving the rest. Many Marsonians can be considered anthropologists now. Studying and memorizing the various cultural details of the species they deal with. Still, while a new culture is something new to them, and therefore worth studying, they hold nothing higher than the concept of SCIENCE!!!!!
War for them is also something new. They had thought of violence before as their species has emotions which in turn breed thoughts of doing harm to others occasionally. However their mentality of doing things for the betterment of their species prevented them from acting on these thoughts.
When they found other species actively engaged in war within the galaxy they were astonished and did their best to learn more. Some of them dove into the science of war and tactics, developing strategies in which they could conquer other planets. They would never actually do this, but they found the thinking experience extremely valuable.
Names for each individual can sometimes be on the long side. Naming is a very personal thing for each Marsonian. When a Marsonian is cloned he is given a batch number to identify him until he is old enough to come up with a name for himself. Many decided to incorporate their batch number in with their name. Many Marsonians also treat names as a kind of trophy. For every major accomplishment in their life they will add another name to signify the event. A good example would be Betha'Pox'Sic'Hyper'Shizzar who was the inventor of the Marsonian hyperdrive. He took the name Hyper after that particular accomplishment to identify himself as the inventor.
Because of their short, pitiful and generally weak physical capabilities, the Marsonians have sought to augment their puny gray bodies with the powers of technology. They have long specialized in the field of robotics and gravity manipulation. They are huge fans of tractor beam technology which allows them to remotely manipulate objects using technology.
Their ships use advanced repulsorlift technology. The anti-gravity devices normally only work within the gravity well of a planet. However, the Marsonians have solved this problem with the use of gravity well projectors. Their ships primary engine is in two parts. The gravity well projector projects a gravity well close to the ship, while the repulsor part of the engine pushes against this gravity well, allowing the ship to push itself along with surprising maneuverability.
It's this multi-directional engine type that has inspired their saucer like design for their ships. No side is truly the "front" of the craft as it can move in any direction at any time.
They have designed and built hordes of robotic workers to do everything for them, from prepare their meals to mundane tedious tasks. All their technology responds to both voice commands and wireless commands issued from computer brain implants.
Their weapon of choice is the Heat Ray. This is a weapon that comes in various shapes and sizes. There's designs for the preference of just about any Marsonian out there, and they're easy enough to build that just about any Marsonian can make one in his space garage. They work by emitting a beam of intense and focused radiation. Pretty much a laser, but it fires beams in the gamma ray range. They can melt through steel given enough time and can pierce right through a human in no time. Like blaster, they cauterize the wounds they make but unlike blasters, they travel at the speed of light and they'll burn right through their target. An unarmored person caught in the beam will find a hole going right through them in less than a second. The disadvantage being that they are fairly easy to defend against.
Most Marsonians away from the homeworld will have one of these equipped. They are very common and a handy weapon should an explorer find himself in a bad situation.
Their other preferred personal weapon is the Disintegration Gun. Pretty much a Disruptor by another name. It's a short range weapon that fires superhot plasma gas at a target, causing the target to vaporize (Disintegrate). A deadly weapon, reserved for the few Marsonian Soldiers.
A less common weapon used by Marsonians offers a non-lethal option. Their Neuro-disruption blaster. It's a weapon that emits very brilliant spotlight and also acts as a powerful sonic cannon. When fired at an enemy on a low setting, the device will emit painful levels of visible and infrared light as well as a sonic blast. These two combined attacks can overload the senses of the target, stunning them momentarily into being unable to see or hear anything.
Should the setting be turned up, this weapon can permanently burn out the retinas of the target and it's sonic blast can be increased to levels that can shatter bones and rupture organs. It is a much more painful and agony inducing weapon which is why it isn't used as often by the Marsonians who prefer to kill quickly if they find they have to kill.
For their ship based weapons, the Marsonians don't disappoint. They're standard weaponized unit for space ship combat is the Illudium PU-36 Destructive Space Modulator. It's pretty much a scaled up version of the Heat Ray but with a particle beam twist. The standard Heat Ray fires, but along that same beam, high intensity anti-matter particles are also fired. The beam can strike with the force of a super heavy turbolaser. Unfortunately they are unsafe. The anti-matter nature of the weapon makes arming and firing the gun dangerous to the user since if it's misaligned by the slightest margin, or the anti-matter fired is in to much a quantity, than the gun itself might explode violently. Safety regulations require the weapon's mechanism be computer controlled and toned down to normal turbolaser levels of damage output. Still, there's nothing better if you want an earth shattering kaboom...
Force Sensitive: A force sensitive Marsonian is extremely rare, and one trained to use the force has actually never happened in their history. They view phenomena like the Force as something that they can not yet scientifically measure or quantify so they treat those you study and use it like some kind of witchdoctor or religious fanatic.
