Family History
The full story of John Paul’s life begins with his great, great grandfather who was also named John Paul Jones. He was a commoner but worked as a soldier for House Pelagia and personal guard for Thesis Padda, King of House Pelagia. It was a prestigious position which he earned through his exceptional skill with both blaster pistol, and blade. He grew very close to Thesis because as a member of the personal guard, they spend a lot of time together and they held similar opinions on a wide range of topics.
Thesis pronounced that John Paul would be his personal body guard. It was a surprise to even John Paul as everyone had assumed that the son of one of House Pelagia’s Barons, Kar Bannor, would have the honor of that position. Thesis however valued the safety his bodyguard would provide to him, not the honor in which it bestowed to whoever filled it so he gave it to John Paul as he was more qualified.
As his personal bodyguard, John Paul traveled with Thesis everywhere throughout the Tapani Sector. He spent his free time when away from his family learning what he could and becoming educated through reading in the various libraries of the House’s they visited. When they returned home to Pelagon and he had a chance to visit his family, he passed on what he knew to his twin 5 year old sons and wrote down his adventures with the King in a journal. During one trip home, he conceived his third child with his wife Talia.
When away with Thesis on another long trip through the Tapani Sector, a Jedi Knight found the Jones Family home and discovered that his sons were Force Sensitive. House Pelagia were strong allies with the Jedi so it was seen as an honor when the Jedi requested their children be taking for training. With John Paul out of contact, Talia herself made the decision to let the boys go with the Jedi.
While that was happening at home, there was an assassination attempt on Thesis while traveling aboard ship. The Assassin was a commoner, sent by Baron Bannor to kill Thesis with a poison needle for the insult of having a commoner put into the position his Son should have gotten. In exchange for killing the King, the Assassin’s family would be moved, their names changed and elevated to the rank of Knight.
The attempt almost succeeded but at the last moment, John Paul stepped between the assassin and Thesis and took the poison needle himself, for the King. Thesis was devastated for while he would never admit it to the other Nobel Families, he and John Paul had become good friends in their travels and he had taken John Paul’s advice on many subjects. With John Paul dying slowly from poison, Thesis offered to elevate him to the rank of Knight so he might die with all the honor that comes with that rank. John Paul declined, and asked instead that the rank be granted to his “sons” since he did not know that the Jedi had already taken his twin boys. Thesis agreed immediately and John Paul died not long after.
When the King returned to his estate on Pelagon he was informed of what had happened with Talia and the Jedi and was again devastated, feeling that he had failed the man who had died for him. Talia informed the King that she was with child though, and Thesis’s hope was renewed. He pronounced that the child would be known as Sir Jones, elevating him to the rank of Knight. He also took Talia in, allowing her to work at his estate as a gardener. When the boy was born, he was named Sir John Thesis Jones.
John Thesis was a sickly child. He could be described as nothing but scrawny for most of his childhood but his physical limitations drove him to better himself. He played sports of all kinds and worked out rigorously every day. After the age of 18, his body began to fill out and he gained some more weight, losing his reputation as the scrawny Knight who can barely lift a sword.
Lord Thesis kept his eye on the boy and took an active part in his life from an early age. He gave the Petty Knight access to his estate, more specifically the library in which John Thesis learned to love reading. He would read mostly fictional tales of heroes and villains or read of the Jedi and their adventures, hoping one day to see his brother’s names in history.
At the age of 22 John Thesis became infatuated with the art of fencing and took up practicing it whenever he could. He joined House Pelagia’s army and was commissioned as an officer. He became adept in the use of many weapons but none fascinated him more than the sword. He practiced his fencing often, reading the works of many famous sword masters from all over the Galaxy.
At age 30 distinguished himself in battle during a minor skirmish with one of the other houses. He became popular among the commoners and earned himself something of a following. He also rose quickly through the ranks of the military.
While he was out campaigning Thesis was speaking to a Baron, and one of his closes friends, Rissel Croft. Baron Croft had a 20 year old daughter who had not been wed yet and Thesis proposed she marry the high standing, but still Petty Knight. Baron Croft was not thrilled with the idea of his daughter marrying downward and in the end Thesis had to agree that if Baron Croft’s daughter decided against it, then that was it.
So Thesis arranged a meeting between Baron Crofts daughter Leona and John. They took to each other immediately despite it meaning Leona would lose a rank. In a year the two were wed and John became somewhat of a wealthy man. He’d saved up most of money during his time in the military. Thesis had granted him a parcel of land to go with his title of Knight and he had gotten a substantial dowry from Baron Croft for marrying his daughter.
John used his wealth to purchase a small starport on Pelagon which earned him a nice profit. He maintained his wealth and lived out the rest of his years on what the starport would earn him. He and Leona had three children, two sons and a daughter. The brothers were Carlton, and Derrick and their sister was named Tessa. Because John had cemented his position in the nobility by marrying a Baroness they all inherited the rank of Knight.
Both Carlton and Tessa were force sensitive and a Jedi team in the city discovered them at a very young age. John and Leona were unwilling to lose two of their children so only Carlton was allowed to go. The Jedi also informed John himself of his closeness to the Force and that his children had inherited it from him. The Jedi left with Carlton, the youngest of the three children.
John retired and placed Derrick in charge of the Starport. While John was good at running the business, Derrick excelled at it. He threw himself into work, expanding the starport and purchasing the surrounding businesses. In a few years time, Derrick had changed the small starport into a large starport and surrounded it with businesses travelers would appreciate. Hotels, speeder rentals, commercial transportation, tourism. With Derrick in charge, the Jones Family was raking in money.
Derrick was also quite scholarly. He studied mostly business and economics but also ventured into philosophy and literature. John also instructed his son in the art of fencing, training him to use both sword and Lightfoil. Derrick learned well and kept up the practice long into his elderly years.
John and Leona managed to get a fairly high standing Baron to marry Tessa, although the large Dowry attached to the girl was probably the deciding factor. She was married into the Baron Stowe’s family and the Jones Family became even stronger.
Between Johns penchant for saving as much money as he could and Derricks great business sense, the Jones Family became a very wealthy name which would serve them well in the future. At some point in Derrick’s 28th birth year, the Padda Family had made some enemies in the other Houses. The new King of House Pelagia, Jason Padda was locked in a struggle with two other Houses for the rights to a system at the edge of the Pelagia Province. Their forces were being beaten hard, facing defeat in almost every major engagement.
One of the last things John Thesis did as the head of the Jones Family was to donate a large portion of credits to the Padda Family under the stipulation that the money be used to purchase more warships to help with the struggle. John remembered all that had been done for him and his family by Thesis and sought to return the favor. The King bought two new capitol ships with the money and succeeded in retaking the system, if only just barely. The show of force however convinced the other Houses to back down and peace, along with a new level of respect, returned to House Pelagia. King Jason never forgot the selfless act by John and when John was near death 19 years later; King Jason elevated his Son Derrick to the rank of Baron, and an elderly Leona to her former status as Baroness. He also swore to repay the debt in time.
The money did come sometime later as the Padda Family recovered from their financial difficulties and Derrick used both this money and his status as a Baron to yet again expand his businesses. He eventually married a young woman named Renara and they had twins, a boy and a girl. Jamison and Sorina were their names. Jamison grew up like his father did, steeped in books and knowledge. He studied philosophy and wrote several books himself. He also became quite interested in politics, writing many essays on the Padda Family and how their guidance has been beneficial for House Pelagia.
Sorina was found to be Force sensitive in her infancy and the Jedi requested she be taken for training. Renara was adamant that her daughter not be taken away from her despite Derricks argument that it was a great honor. Derrick eventually relented and they chose to keep their child. Her Force Sensitivity was did not go unknown however and soon several families were courting the Jones Family for her hand in marriage. On her 19th birthday, Derrick announced that she would be wed to Follan Padda, Nephew to King Jason on his wife’s side. The Padda Family had not had a Jedi chosen in their family for several generations and desperately wanted the honor. Derrick knew his daughter was being wed to the royal family for nothing more than breeding stock, he also knew that she would know more happiness there than Derrick could provide for her and he had king Jasons personal assurances that Follan was a good man.
Jamison became a tutor for the children of the Lords and a well known scholar on Pelagon. He married Lady Dace, a widow whose family had been damaged greatly by the conflict House Pelagia went through and direct blood relative to King Jason. Lady Dace was the Kings Niece.
This marriage, his own status and the wealth of their family allowed him to rise to the rank of Lord. He saw his sister often in the Padda Estate and in his older years became advisor to the crown. He also became something of a shut in, taking time out only for his studies and when the King requested his advice. He had four children with Lady Dace, two sons and two daughters. John Paul, Reginald, Calipsa and Sarah were their names. Out of the four of them, John Paul was the youngest.
He was found to be Force Sensitive and the Padda Family urged Jamison to allow his son to go with the Jedi. Jamison refused, thinking that more sons would allow the expansion of the Jones family name.
Personal History
Being fourth in the line of succession to the Throne, Jamison ensured that John was taught by the best. As soon as he could speak, Jamison went off world to find someone who could tutor John in the Force. Such tutors were understandably rare and he ended up hiring a Mercenary who had once been a Witch of Dathomir. Her name was Iniga.
John grew up learning spells and words to call upon the Force. Hours spent meditating upon a specific word and the desired effect created a sort of muscle memory. With the utterance of a word and a focus of the will upon that word and John could command the Force just like a Jedi would. Unfortunately, while he had plenty of power, he lacked control. Iniga could use the same word to move a pot a few inches to one side or the other or blast a crowd of people onto their feet. John could only ever manage large effects that weren’t graceful or efficient.
While Iniga could pick up a coin and float it into Johns hand, John could only pick the coin up and slam it around the room. He had very little fine control.
His big brother Reginald taught him fencing with the lightfoil for the House Tournament but John was never very good at it. Reginald was the Champion of House Pelagia and John could barely hold a candle to him.
His teaching continued for the greater part of his youth. When a border dispute with one of the other houses erupted not long after John’s 17th birthday, he and Iniga were sent along with a diplomatic envoy to represent the royal family. This provided House Mecetti to make contact with Iniga. With the offer of greater payment than House Pelagia, Iniga agreed.
Upon their return to Pelagia, Iniga began brainwashing John, teaching him aspects of the dark side, telling him secrets about his family and others within the House, quietly and secretly turning him against House Pelegia.
When it was time to strike, Iniga sabotaged the Palace’s shield generator and John refused to join the Palace guard in defense. The attack was repelled but Iniga was killed (by House Mecetti forces) and John was captured.
Moved to a secret facility on Obulette where he continued training in the Force. His food and information sources were tightly controlled and every aspect of his life was twisted by propaganda of some sort. His new teacher was a Sorcerer of Tund. Named Alavor Randil, the Sorcerer taught John some Sith Magic and the finer points of Totem Magic. John carved his own staff to use as a focus to help his control and Alavor gave him an amulet that amplified John’s power and also allowed Alavor to track him.
At age 22, the facility where John was kept was raided by House Pelagia along with a team of Jedi. John fought violently against the Jedi with raw power, but their finer control and greater efficiency allowed them to hold their own until John exhausted himself. The facility was destroyed, John was taken back to Pelagia.
In the next few months, John was deprogrammed. He had to relearn what he had forgotten and taught the other side of the propaganda he had been forced to listen to. The Jedi saw him as a possible threat given that he was tainted by the dark side. They demanded John come with them and Jamison was forced to agree to their logic. The Jedi was the best place for John to learn to fight against the Dark Side and prevent it’s taint from spreading further.
John was one of the oldest apprentices at the Academy and learned under Jedi Master Halcyon. Jor taught John that the Force, was life. The Force generated life, and was in turn generated by life. To use the Force to destroy life, or twist life, was against its fundamental nature. Doing so twisted a person on the inside. To twist the Force to act against itself one required to twist themselves first. The more it was done, the more twisted you became.
John listened and turned over a new leaf. The Jedi teachings took root well but his credibility with the Jedi Order was little to none. Even non-Jedi who were closely affiliated with the order treated him with suspicion.
When Jor founded the Jedi Templar, John was one of the first to sign up. He thought it was his best option for turning his image around and to do the most good. He had once been a Dark Jedi, who better to help others return to the light than one who had walked the dark before himself? Jor saw wisdom in this decision and accepted him immediately.
