<Welcome The Trapped Man>
Well Chummer, its do or die today.
-The Trapped Man
Good luck, you’re going to need it.
-Keyfast
Luck is the last thing I’ll ever need; Clegane will pay with more than just a shot knee.
-The Trapped Man
He’ll know your coming.
-Timestop
Let him try and stop me.
-The Trapped Man
A small computerized version of a Samurai formed in the local node. He had spent hours looking for a way into this node without alerting the system to his presence. Looking around the place seemed to have been graphed in a typical office setting. There were plenty of doors possibly leading to other nodes on the system. This was just the first node but it was behind security. He had an account on the node already but he had used it to hack an administrator account.
He had noticed around this time of day the Spiders on the network would not check in as much. He had a set time limit however and knew he was on borrowed time. Once the security logs where checked they’d be alerted to the creation of an administrator account.
A man in a black suit walked up to him and ran something that looked like a metal detector over him, and then began to walk onward to do the same to other icons on the node. No doubt it was the IC on the node looking for intruders well his Access ID matched here and he thanked the coder he had found for his stealth program taking the form of a cape on his icon’s back.
Urging his Icon forward through the cubicals he tried to avoid interacting with other icons and avoiding the IC dressed up as ‘men in black’. As he ran his analyze program a small yellow birch was pulled from the samurai’s sack. It flew over to one of the IC program’s patrolling and circled him. Then flew back to him. The Analyze program reported the IC being loaded with BlackHammer, the kind that was liable to get a hotsim user’s brains fried. He thanked himself for not opting to go that route.
Spending over an hour wandering through the maze of cubicals he finally came to a desk with a huge ledger on it. He made a note of where the Access Log was if he had a chance to come back later he’d rework it so they found nothing suspicious in it. Moving past that he came to a large green door with a warning “Employee’s Only.” His Samurai icon walked up to the door and pushed it open. It set up access to another node but he didn’t have time to hack this one. He’d already spent to long getting here so he jumped onto it from the other node.
Walking through the pathway, revealed a room of fountains where the water flowed up into pools of water and had been constructed as if you were walking on the ceiling. It was a little disorienting even from his screen as pillars of water all throughout this room flowed upwards into the pools of water. No doubt it was designed to throw off other users who were not familiar with the type of distortions one could find in a node. Again he was glad he wasn’t hotsimmed otherwise he’d probably feel the dizzying effect.
His Icon proceeded to the middle of the room where an orb sat floating defying gravity. He moved to touch it but then reminded himself of what he had been schooled in the last six months. Always check an Icon before touching it. His little bird flew out analyzing the orb and then shivered flying back to him quickly.
‘Damn a databomb… not sure if it’s set to destroy the person accessing it or the information… guess I’ll have to disarm it.’ He though as he proceeded to pull out a key ring that started to go to work. During this the node shook and the water’s began to flash red.
A system wide alert no doubt, his time had been cut short. There wasn’t any time to loose, as he watched onscreen his Samurai Icon trying to ‘pick lock’ the orb. Finally it succeeded and he grabbed for the information just as a few men in black started into the node. Two of them, each of them fired with their virtual pistols hitting the samurai’s armor. Even with the armor program protecting his icon his Samurai was looking in bad shape.
His turn for some payback. His Icon raced forward pulling out a Nodaichi and slashed through one of the IC who exploded in a contortion of pixels. The other shot at his icon again but luckily his armor program was enough to shield him as it glowed bright red for a second. His Icon’s second slash ended the fight as the IC similarly exploded. Rushing forth from the room back into the cubicals he ran past the ledger not giving it a moment’s glance. It was too late to alter the records of him being there. He just needed to get out.
Programs started to move away from him as doors opened from everywhere converging on his location. He dodged the best he could keeping away from them as shots where fired, he accessed another node, his icon shoulder rushing a door to bust through it. The node here was of a throne room and someone was sitting on the throne ahead of him. The IC surprising wasn’t following him here, and he could only wonder why.
Someone was up ahead and he cautiously approached what looked liked a knightly looking King standing before an open throne. The Knight welcomed him taking one hand off a longsword. No doubt another attack program.
“I see those hacking skills of yours are just starting to bloom, not much of a Decker and more like a hotdogger but I didn’t expect too much with only six months. I’ve read quite a bit about you Darren Benex and from what I’ve seen you’re quite resourceful, and I like those kinds of people,” said the knight.
“I don’t know who you are but you don’t know anything about me. Don’t even try to pull me into Ares’ web of lies. You may be a Triple A Corperation but that doesn’t mean I can’t smell Drek a mile away. So you can go slot yourself.” Came his reply that came form the Samurai’s mouth in his icon’s programmed voice. It sounded like a cross between and Ork and a Troll and for it being a human in another time and place he’d thought that a bit funny.
“Strong words, but I’ve come to expect that from Shadowrunners. I’ve got what you want, the keys to your escape, but they come at a price. Whoever you think you are, we need the same thing and you can eliminate a hindrance for Ares,” said the Knight as the doors shut behind both of them. “So what do you say, think you can bear the title Dragonslayer? I’m willing to bet the room won’t protect her this time from that gun you’ve been saving for just the right moment.”
“You want me to kill the dragon? Have you been taking Kamikaze? I’d have every fraggin’ wizworm on my backside looking for me. I highly doubt you’d withhold information otherwise they’d suspect your involvement,” he said waiting for the man’s reply. Whoever this person was he had drawn him to the table and he wasn’t offering much just freedom…. But that was everything wasn’t it? He was offering everything he could get in the outside world which in his world was everything.
“That’s your problem not mine, though from what I know, you didn’t choose to be a shadowrunner if you wanted to ‘play it safe’ and half of the population could think you’re a terrorist and you’d still do it for the money. Whether it’s for money or excitement you Shadowrunners are all the same. So what’s it going to be?” asked the Knight Icon who tilted his head and a question mark appeared above his head.
“Fine, and after this there’s no strings right?”
“We’ll see about that, but you should stop staring at the screen before you miss your chance you only have five seconds left,” said the Knight. That’s when he became aware of movement in the room as the contact’s over his eyes opaqued to he could see through his screen. Jumping up from his seated position time seemed to slow down as magic flowed through his body. With practiced efficiency he drew his Ares Viper Slivergun and the smartlink activated showing him a hud of how many rounds he had left in his clip, as well as diagnostics, and the vector in which it would achieve optimal killzone shot.
The lights flashed out as the room and he got a glimpse of those golden eyes, so unnatural on a human yet he couldn’t help but feel the slight pang of guilt as he pulled the trigger and the gun shreaded sliver’s of metal shooting them out against an unprotected target. The darkness faded rapidly as an explosion of magical energy blasted everything back, and he hit the wall hard knocking old CD disc’s of an age long gone as well as inferior computer parts, things like Androids and Ipads scattered across the floor. He didn’t even bother to grab one as he headed for his possible escape route. Those antiques could be worth a fortune to the right buyer but that wasn’t on his mind now.
Sliding to a stop above an access hatch he opened it in the dark prying it open manually until he could fit himself down the shoot. If the power stayed off just a little longer he could make it out of the furnace room and hopefully out of the building. Then he’d just have to lay low and avoid Errant Knight. If we was lucky that magical flux of energy had affected more than just his room.
Slamming into the opposing wall as he came out of the shoot he went for the door pushing it open and ran up the access stairs to the upperfloors. He came across two Errant Knight Guards. Well he was still in the Errant Knight outfit that he had come in, six months ago. ‘Room Service’ hadn’t done much besides clean the cloths, and he was sure that damn dragon had laughed in the back of her head about her pet ‘monkey’. He nodded to them and they returned the same, not questioning where he was going or why he had come from downstairs. Probably just thought he had checked down there when the power went out. Slipping his way outside he saw it was night time, and he got his first breath of fresh air before noticing the power wasn’t just out in his room it was out everywhere. His electronic display was acting screwy. Had it been doing this before?
Without a second thought he proceeded out into Ares’ sector of Detroit, the sooner he got off Ares’ land and disappeared the better. Life was just about to get more interesting, he wondered if his friends back in Seattle had ever gotten that blood mage Bitch, but she would have to wait. His first goal was going after the huge troll, named ‘The Mountain that Moves’ who had sold him out for a disc of the assassination of the last President of the United States. President Dunklezhan, and from the video he should have guessed killing a dragon would result in a mana ebb like that. He wouldn’t have long… before too long he would become the hunted. He was content however for he knew he had the edge to complete this task, and luck was on his side.
Hey, you still out there Trapped Man?
-Keyfast
I hope you escaped, and are laying low. There was news that Ares’ was testing their “Emergency Disaster Plans” out yesterday.
-Keyfast
They’re lying. Something big happened there that they are trying to cover up. My friends say the sky light up, and they think someone killed a Dragon.
-Timestop
Come on you don’t really believe that do you? No one’s Fraggin’ crazy enough to make a deal with a Dragon, let alone kill one. He’d be hunted to the end of his days.
