On one had I think this is terrible news.
On the other, this means George Lucas might not be the director of these next three films which means they have at least have a chance at being good.

I'm fairly skeptical either way to be honest. You can only go in two directions with the franchise, forward or backward.
If we go backward and make a prequel to the prequels, that basically means making the Kotor games and TOR into movies. Which is unnecessary.
If you go forward you run into all of the already well established EU content that, in my opinion, would lose its impact if it were adapted to film.
Maybe a new director/writer can do something better with the franchise that Lucas never could have envisioned. But I'll retain my skepticism.

I wouldn't even mind if they ignored all of the established EU so long as they were good movies. Not all of it is that great anyway. Certainly they could retcon children of the Jedi out of existence.

I recall reading somewhere that they're planning on not using any existing material for the new films. That said, they also claim that they will be releasing new Star Wars films every two or three years after 7, 8, and 9. If that's the case then they should certainly use material from EU. If they're going to make way too many star wars films, at least use cool stories like Kotor or the Thrawn trilogy.
It'd be funny if they let a bunch of directors have a at least one go at making a Star Wars film. I'd love to attempts by Tarantino, Nolan, Peter Jackson, Duncan Jones, Whedon, etc. Not that they should do that...
