Name: Sirax
Homeworld: None (Nomadic)
Appearance: Sirax are tall and thin and extremely lithe. Their heads have pointed chins and a segmented dome heads. Their mouths are under their chins and flanked on either side by a pair of mandibles. They have four eyes, two on each side of their face which are completely independent from one another so often they focus on completely different things at the same time.
Their arms are long, reaching almost down to their knees. They are jointed at the shoulders, elbows and have a ball joint at the wrist which gives their hands an unparalleled range of motion. Their fingers are short and stubby but extremely strong and able to dig into surfaces in order to allow them to climb on vertical surfaces.
Their legs are long and digitigrade with 3 long toes with retractable claws which they use for climbing.
Their skin is a tough carapace that is flexible so it doesn't require segments but is ridged enough that even sharp metal has a tough time getting through it. It's tough but flexible nature is most similar to kevlar.

Biology:
About 90% of all Sirax Drones and are nearly identical. They have the average intelligence of a young human child and little to no individuality. They work and live aboard their nomadic Hive Ship, constantly building and rebuilding sections of the ship to suit the needs of the Hive. They travel in groups of 10-15 generally and together are capable of impressive feats of construction and architecture.
The other 10% are the higher casts. The most intelligent of the Sirax is the Queen. She is much larger and much taller than the average drone. The Queen is completely immobile and her entire body is built/grown into the hive ship itself. She has the unique ability to control and manipulate the genetic structure of every Sirax she hatches. She produces eggs in clutches of several hundred at a time which are fertilized by the very few males aboard the hive ship. Without any interaction, each egg will hatch into your basic, unintelligent, drone. However if the Queen wishes to make another male or a more intelligent member then she can do so by manipulating the egg and injecting it with various hormones and chemicals.
One step below the Queen is the males, who are few and act as her guard. Males tend to be larger and bulkier than the drones with a much greater intelligence. Thanks to the information that the hunters bring back, they have learned much in the way of martial arts and the use of weapons. They are probably the most formidable fighters of all the Sirax.
One step below the males are the Hunters. They look indistinguishable from the regular drones but are born with a sense of individuality. They have a sense of self awareness and can leave the link with the Hive and indefinite period of time without any ill effects. They are extremely intelligent in order for them to operate out in the galaxy at large. Unlike all the other Sirax, they can speak basic through the use of a electronic voice box attached to their throats which interprets neural impulses and translates them into sounds.
The last of then higher casts is the Crew, who are only intelligent enough to operate very specific pieces of the Hive Ship and only that piece. Each crew is bred for a specific task wether it be navigation, weapons control, life support, engine operation, ect ect…
History:
The Sirax come from somewhere in the unknown regions. Hundreds of years ago Their planet suffered catastrophic climate change when a rogue asteroid entered into it's orbit. Titanic shifts in the planets crust caused volcanic eruptions and earthquakes which tore huge swaths of the planet apart. The Sirax survived by constructing gigantic hive ships in space and evacuating as many of it's people as they could.
Over time, several hive ships fell into conflict with the Chiss after they attempted to recolonize on an uninhabited planet that just happened to be within the Chiss Ascendancy. A few more were lost to simple starvation after they ran out of resources.
Only one Hive Ship has ever been known to make it out of the Unknown Region and into the galaxy at large. This Hive interacts with other species through the use of Hunters, who are dispatched into the galaxy in order to scout for possible planets to colonize, bring back advanced technology, acquire information about their surroundings or even make deals and trade with other worlds for resources.
This Hive Ship has become known as Skira after their former homeworld and it is nomadic, moving from one system to another, trading for supplies and information and attempting to build up positive relations with as many planets as possible in hopes of one day finding a planet it can recolonize.
Culture:
Sirax are communal by nature. The drones operate in group and act to better the group rather than themselves. Each drone has an individual identity but is born with an extreme sense of working for the greater good. As all the drones are technically females and look very similar there is nothing like sexual harassment, or racism and even cliques are prevented from forming because each drone works with different groups on a regular basis.
The Link
The Hive Ship is at least partially alive. The Queen is literally grown into the hive ship itself and is connected to nearly every section of the ship via neural pathways that line the bulkheads and decks of the ship in all it's compartments, including it's maintenance spaces. Every Sirax, from the drones to the males can connect to these neural pathways via touch by nerve endings in it's carapace. Through this nerve network each individual Sirax is connected to every other.
They call it the Link and it is through the Link that all Sirax do 70% of their communication. It's how the drones and crew receive orders to operate the Hive and how the Males coordinate their efforts to protect the Queen. The link is so vital to their existence that most of them need it in order to survive. Drones can't be separated from the link for more than half a day before they begin a mental breakdown. The more independent the Sirax the longer they can last without it. Only the Hunters can survive indefinitely without The Link as they are specifically engineered to operate separately from the Hive.
Language
The Sirax have no spoken language. Most of their communication is done through The Link and is purely mental. Anything that isn't said through the link is done through a combination of body language and pheromones. Close knit groups of drones will communicate entirely via pheromones while they work, sending out simple messages via scent.
Since they have no spoken language of their own, it is very difficult for them to communicate with other species who do. To solve this issue, the Queen began breeding Hunters with the capability of speech via electronic voice boxes which are worn around their throats and are operated vie neural impulses. The voice box accepts thoughts from the Hunter and translates it into Basic (or any other language that can be programmed into it). However the device does not translate both ways. For the Hunter to understand you, he must know the language that your are speaking.
Dress/Clothing
Most drones operate around the Hive Ship completely nude. They don't really need clothing and generally don't wear any unless it is some sort of safety equipment.
The Queen is actually grown/wired into the Hive ship itself and so wears some clothing which covers up some of the cybernetic grafts and implants. This clothing is usually expensive, ornate, and extremely soft. The Queen used to wear simple rags but when they began intermingling with other species of the Galaxy the Queen adopted more royal clothing in order to meet expectations rather than any sense of self worth.
The males wear armor of various types depending on what sort of combat the male specializes in. The most basic of their armor is made out of the carapace of fallen Sirax glued together using resin but they have been known to wear full suits of Republic Marine body armor they managed to acquire through various means but most of them wear a hodgepodge of various armors that they've managed to string together.
Crew wear a simple uniform consisting of a short sleeve brown tunic and brown pants with only a simple rank insignia on the collar and name tag.

The Hive
The Sirax don't have a plant that they can call home. Their homeworld was destroyed several hundred years ago by tidal forces when their planet acquired a rogue asteroid as a moon. The Sirax species survived by launching huge vessels into space and spreading out among the stars. Most of the other ships were destroyed or disabled through various misadventures and only one known Hive ship has ever been known to leave the Unknown Region. That ship is the only known habitat of Sirax in the galaxy.
The Hive Ship itself now known as Skira is approximately 9 Kilometers long and 4.5 kilometers wide. It's actual size is constantly changing though as the ship is alive and portions of it die and need to be rebuilt or new spaces need to be added to accommodate it's population. It contains nearly 750,000 Skira at any given time, getting as high as 900,000 during breeding season.
They also incorporate more advanced technology wherever possible. They salvaged a hyperdrive from a Chiss cruiser to replace their own inefficient version and they've picked up other systems like weapons and engines from trade and combat alike. Using knowledge and technology acquired from others, the Sirax have become expert at assimilating alien technology into their organic systems.
The Skira is held together primarily with resin which is produced by the ship itself but is supplemented with different kinds of resin acquired from other species. The ship has grown so large that it cannot supply itself with all the Resin it needs to keep the ship in top shape. It is for this reason that the Skira have sent out Hunters to get more Resin wherever they can.
It uses Ion cannons primarily as it's offensive weapons. The whole ship has over a hundred ion cannons of various sizes. The exact number changes regularly as old cannons are disassembled and rebuilt or used for parts all the time.
