Dr. Lisa Sandrow pried open the frozen doors to Hoth Outpost 21 with a grunt. Nobody had been here in almost three decades and ice was a serious problem. They were lucky they even found the place but the sensors had spotted the metal structure right where it was supposed to be according to old Rebel records. 20 miles north of the famous Hoth Base where the rebels had called home for a time, Outpost 21 was a small perimeter structure that was supposed to house and support a small group of patrolmen on the outskirts of the Rebel Base. It was one of a series of 25 such outposts all around the main base where sensors placed even further out could relay their data to.
Dr. Sandrow was a historical anthropologist here to study the often overlooked outposts. Her partner, an archeologist named Dr. Soren Alenko. The pair of them had be recruited by the New Republic's Science Administration to travel to Hoth and check out a mysterious distress beacon that had been activated at Outpost 21. As far as anyone at the NRSA was concerned, Hoth was completely uninhabited and by now any electronic systems at Hoth Base should be completely non functional. They were baffled when the distress call was received on an old Rebel long range channel.
They decided that it was long past due to send a team to document the site and they figured Outpost 21 would be as good a place as any to start, if only to shut off that distress beacon.
"The entryway looks untouched." Dr. Sandrow said.
"Excuse me Doctor." Bowman said. "But I am part of the protection detail. Perhaps I should go in first."
Dr. Sandrow scowled. "Nonsense. This place has been abandoned for decades. There's nothing in here to harm us."
"The local wampa population may disagree with you there Doctor, but it's your mission. Lead the way." Bowman said, unwilling to argue.
Sandrow and Alenko walked through the doorway and into the outpost, shining their lights into the darkened room. "No sign of main power being on." Alenko said. He grabbed a handful of chemical lights, cracked them and began throwing them about the entryway.
Bowman followed in right behind the two scientists, cowering in his coat and getting in out of the wind with haste. He'd lived here before, for some time in fact, but that didn't mean he liked it. The cold bothered him. It slowed him down. Normally he didn't wear clothes, or rather, his clothes were just extensions of himself. For this mission he was glad for the big winter coat the republic had provided.
Alenko approached the watchstander's primary computer console near the entrance and tried to access it without any luck. "We'll need the generators and the adaptors from the speeder. Oh, and the portable heaters."
"Especially the heaters." Bowman said.
Sandrow grabbed the comlink from her belt. She fumbled with the unfamiliar device. She was used to working in a library or archive. Not in the field. "Uh, hello down at the speeder." She said uncertainly into the link. "We're all clear in here. You may start bringing in the equipment."
Bowman sighed. "I wouldn't say we're all clear Doctor. We've been in one room so far. I recommend you and Doctor Alenko set up here. I'll clear the rest of the outpost."
Sandrow bowed her head. "Thank you Mr. Gray." She said, all too eager to get the strange man out of her presence.
